In the 2018 Renault car in Bahrain next week, Fernando Alonso is speeding up his preparations for his return to Formula 1, with a two day test.
The Spaniard is returning to the sport he quit for a third spell with the Renault team two years ago, where he won both of his World Championship titles, and he is currently working hard to ensure that when he climbs into the cockpit for the first race in 2021, he is up to speed.
He has already visited the team’s facilities at Enstone in England and at Viry-Châtillon in France, and on a filming day in Barcelona earlier this month, he drove Renault ‘s latest competitor, the R.S.20.
And Alonso will test the two-year – old R.S.18 car in Bahrain on November 4th and 5th as the next step in his training program.
Alonso had not raced a Formula 1 car since his last race with McLaren, the 2018 season finale at Abu Dhabi, until his outing in Barcelona two weeks ago. But the two-time champion said he was impressed with Renault’s R.S.20 after getting back behind the wheel of an F1 charger again.
He said, “I believe the car was a nice surprise.” We know that the car has been doing well in the last few races, and I have felt the grip and definitely the strong potential in it.
I was driving a Renault engine for the last time in 2018 and I felt a step forward, which is pretty important there. It all felt good. Since I’m not up to speed yet, I wasn’t able to optimize the car’s efficiency, but I’m satisfied with the day.
‘’Our feet have a lot of optimistic energy and hope for the coming year. I think we have a fantastic team, a great team of talented people, great sponsors, a lot of fans around the world, so I think we’ve got all the ingredients to make 2021 a good one.’’
