The penultimate 11th race of the 2019 season took place over the weekend in Russia and found a new champion. Winning the fifth pole and having a big advantage, the Dutch driver of ART team Nyck De Vries had a calm race keeping the position from the beginning to the end of the race, thereby winning the 4th in the season.
And that achievement is also enough for him to be crowned in 2019 by main rival Nicholas Latifi, test driver of Williams F1, only runner-up. The points gap has exceeded the maximum number of points possible won in the remaining 3 races of the year.
Latifi had an impressive start with 3 wins and 1 time in 3rd of 6 races in the first 3 stages of the season. However, he only got 1 more first and 2 other podiums in the next 8 races causing him to be left behind by the opponent in the championship race and officially failed at Sochi. Now the Canadian driver will still have to make an effort in the last race in Abu Dhabi to protect the runner-up against Luca Ghiotto and teammate Sergio Sette Camara.
Winning F2 tournament means Nyck will be “eliminated” from the tournament because the champion is not allowed to return in the next season to protect his championship. However, he also found his new ‘parking’ at Formula E 2019-20-20 season at the newly joined Mercedes-Benz EQ team with a former F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne. This will be a new start for drivers born in 1995 on the career path and hope to one day have the opportunity at F1.
Sochi was the venue for the eight-stage race of the F3 and the champion was named in the first race even though it was not the race winner. Marcus Armstrong of Prema Racing (Ferrari’s youth team) came in first, winning 3rd in the last 6 races. However, all attention is on the runner-up, his teammate and also the host driver Shwartzman when he officially won the F3 2019 championship.
