Every sport has a prestigious event, which determines the best of the best. Racing is not an exception. From Formula One to NASCAR, here is a list of top five car races in the world.
1. 24 Hours of Le Mans
First held in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was often called the “Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency”. This race is one of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, besides the Indy 500 and Monaco Grand Prix. It is held annually in June on the Circuit de le Sarthe, a mix of closed public roads and specialized racing roads. Three drives are allowed to drive a competing vehicle so that they have enough time to eat and rest during its unique 24 hour competition.
2. Monaco Grand Prix
Held annually on the Circuit de Monaco since 1929, the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix happens during the last weekend of May and weaves around Monaco’s small city streets with tight corners, elevation changes, and tunnels. It is one of the most challenging courses on tour.
3. Daytona 500
The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s prestigious event. It is also the first race of the year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The inaugural Daytona 500 was first held in 1959. The race is held annually in February, carrying the largest purse and highest television viewership.
4. Indianapolis 500
Occurring during Memorial Day weekend, Indianapolis 500was first held in 1911. This race features 200 laps counterclockwise around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Traditionally, winners kiss the brick finish line.
5. Bathurst 1000
Started in 1960, Bathurst 1000 is held annually in early October on the Mount Panorama Circuit, New South Wales, Australia. Although the race track is made up of public roads, with the sharp turns and tight roads, its elevation is a challenge for the drivers.
